CPTnet May 6, 2004 ASUBPEESCHOSEEWAGONG : Update on the threat of a $10,000
fine for Roberta Keesick
by Lisa Martens
In a March 30, 2004 release called, "We've been Self Managing for Thousands
of Years" the Grassy Narrows team reported that Ontario's Ministry of
Natural Resources (MNR) was threatening Anishnaabe (Ojibwa) trapper,
Roberta Keesick with more than $10, 000 in fines. They planned to impose
the fines if Roberta and her helper continued work on her trapline, making
trails and building a cabin, without an MNR permit. Roberta is doing her
work in accordance with her inherent and Treaty rights and does not want the
permission of the province.
Since the last report, Roberta has talked further with a couple of
employees of the MNR who have told her that they want her to get a permit so
that if there is a forest fire or another incursion, they can protect her.
Roberta explained recently to CPT members that the MNR already knows where
she is, and that she is proceeding to build her trappers' cabin.
