#1: In 1948, in order for Israel to be created as a Jewish state, hundreds of Arabic villages were ethnically cleansed. The hundreds of thousands who fled would never be allowed back to their homes, despite repeated UN resolutions. They and their families still live in refugee camps all over the region. On 15 May, Palestinians in Aida camp, near Bethlehem, joined their compatriots in commemorating this event, in Arabic called the Nakba, or Catastrophe, by sending up clouds of black balloons.
#2: CPT Hebron joined Palestinians, Israelis and internationals in protesting the arrest of Mousa Abu Maria, a local leader of nonviolence in Beit Ummar. Participants wore signs in different languages reading, "I am Mousa Abu Maria", and a number of Israeli protesters, when arrested, identified themselves as such. Although the action was completely peaceful, the Israeli army greeted it with barbed wire and stun-grenades.
#3: 12-year-old Killed: On March 2, Hebron CPTers witnessed a clash between Israeli soldiers and "shabaab" (Palestinian youth) in Bab iZaweyya, the market area near the CPT apartment. An Israeli military sniper killed a 12-year-old youth in the melee following a procession of shabaab, who were yelling and throwing stones at the soldiers in the street. The youth were protesting the recent Israeli bombings of Gaza, which killed many, including an entire family. CPTers later visited those hospitalized from injuries sustained in the clash. The hospital administrator said snipers targeted joints, such as elbows and knees, and the pelvis.
