Peace Briefs

Witness Against War: Voices for Creative Nonviolence has organized a peace walk starting July 12 from Chicago, IL, site of the 1968 Democratic Convention, to St. Paul, MN, arriving September 1 in time for this year's Republican Convention.  Walkers seek to raise public awareness of and opposition to the anticipated deployment of the 32nd Brigade Combat Team of the Wisconsin National Guard to Iraq.  Contact www.vcnv.org for details.

Walk to Overcome Racism: Community groups, including the "Right Relations Circle" of Fort Frances, ON marked the UN's International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, March 21 (also Good Friday and the first day of spring) with a walk to overcome racism.  Beginning at the United Native Friendship Centre, participants walked around the downtown area and ended with a feast.  Partly in response to a racial incident at the local high school, the walkers sought to raise awareness of the harm cause by racism, and the commitment to build meaningful partnerships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
