CHICAGO: You didn't REALLY want to hit reply, did you? (and other things
you might want to know about CPTnet.)

The CPTnet Editor, accustomed as she is to anonymity and trying to
cultivate the image of a woman of mystery, forgot to include her byline in
the release, "Rochester, NY: 'In Colombia there are hundreds of Acteals.'"
Several readers pointed out that it is inappropriate not to include a byline
when a release is written in the first person and they are correct. I,
Kathleen Kern, wrote that release.

We are gratified by the messages received in response to that posting, but
wish to remind our gentle readers that they should not hit "reply" to
postings that appear on menno.org.cpt.news [at] mennolink [dot] org. They will bounce
to one of several locations, and, depending on who is accessing the e-mail
at that address, risk never getting seen again by a mortal being. The
CPTnet editor will be happy to receive messages from you at
"guest.524947 [at] MennoLink [dot] org." General questions should be directed to the
CPT's Chicago office address below in the tagline. If you wish to comment
on a release, please post it to menno.org.cpt.d [at] mennolink [dot] org.

Q: I keep trying to unsubscribe to CPTnet and nothing happens.

A: This is probably because you are hitting "reply." To
subscribe or unsubscribe to CPTnet go to the CPT web site at
http://www.cpt.org/subscribe.php and follow the directions. If you do not have
web access, read the following directions from Mennolink :

Q: I keep trying to make comments about the CPTnet postings, but nothing
happens when I hit "reply." How come?

A: Menno.org.cpt.news is a moderated newsgroup and only accepts news items
from designated staff people. Hitting "reply" will cause your message to
bounce somwhere into the ether. If you have comment to make on the
releases,
CPT asks you to post them to menno.org.cpt.d [at] mennolink [dot] org.

Q: I don't care about what's going on in Hebron. I'm only interested in
Chiapas. How can I get the Chiapas releases only?

A: The reason we put the origin of the postings in the subject heading is so
that people can delete the postings that do not interest them. Our feelings
will not be hurt if you delete postings on locations which are of no
interest to you. Well, maybe we'll wonder about your priorities, but we'll
try to be magnanimous.

Q. Why can't you split CPTnet into different lists--one for each of the
different project locations?

A. Because our projects in Haiti, Hebron, Washington, DC, Richmond, VA,
Chiapas, South Dakota, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Colombia are (or have
been) interrelated. CPTers who have worked in different locations have all
agreed
that the work of each of the projects informs the others. It has also
enabled CPTers and their supporters to see the broader patterns of
domination that are eerily similar from continent to continent, and share
the nonviolent strategies for social change developed by grassroots
organizers in one location with organizers in
others.

Q: I support CPT, but six postings a week is just too much! Can't you
guys cut back a little?

A: As CPT grows and expands into various conflict locations the frequency of
postings is going to become more and more of an issue. We are struggling to
balance our mandate to communicate eyewitness accounts of conflicts that
mainstream media passes by, with our readership's attention spans and the
general information fatigue in our societies. We have not yet achieved that
balance.

If people have suggestions for how CPTnet can adapt as CPT expands, they may

Q. How come you guys don't post stuff about Rwanda, East Timor, urban
issues, domestic violence, Sudan, Chechnya, etc., etc.?

A. We are a small organization which cannot possibly address all situations
of violent conflict around the world. We reserve CPTnet for postings from
CPT workers who are writing eyewitness accounts of what is happening from
the different project location.

Q. I have a question about CPTnet that doesn't appear here. How come?

A. You want we should read your minds? We welcome fresh, new, zippy
