THE PHILIPPINES: CPT delegation issues statement against continuing U.S. military use of the Philippines for "War on Terror"

On Wednesday, 20 February 2008, North American and Filipino members of a delegation sponsored by Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) joined about 100 other people at a prayer rally protesting the continued presence the U.S. military in the Philippines. The delegation issued the following statement outside the library of Olongapo City National High School:

We members of the Christian Peacemaker Teams cry out with the people who live in the shadows of the Clark and Subic military bases and who have suffered from U.S. militarization and live with the legacy of toxic waste.

Those of us from North America pledge to return home and take your struggle and your stories with us. We stand with you in your righteous efforts for peace and justice.

Yesterday, we saw the USS Pecos Naval ship docked at Subic. Clearly, U.S. "military contamination" of the Philippines continues today, in spite of the base closings. WE HUMBLY OPPOSE THE CONTINUED USE OF THE PHILIPPINES FOR THE MISGUIDED U.S.-LED "WAR ON TERROR."

U.S. President George Bush has said that the "U.S. military must be ready to strike at a moment's notice in any dark corner of the world." We Christian Peacemakers believe the Philippines is NOT a "dark corner," but a beacon of light, of hope, of love and of peace.

The Bible says, "…the Lord will teach His ways so that we may walk in His paths…the people will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation. Nor will they train for war anymore…

We will walk in the name of the Lord, our God forever and ever." (Micah 4:2-5)

Signed,
Christian Peacemaker Teams Delegation
