AT-TUWANI: Nonviolent demonstration opens road in South Hebron Hills

Palestinians in the South Hebron hills gathered on 29 February 2008 to open the main access road to Yatta, which the Israeli military had bulldozed shut two weeks earlier.

Palestinian women began the action by removing the earth mound first by hand, and later by using small shovels. Women and children also successfully moved a large concrete block from the road entrance, clearing the way for vehicle traffic. Over sixty men from the area gathered for noon prayers at the roadblock.

This roadblock has been a significant hardship for people in the area. The road provides the only route in the South Hebron Hills for people to drive to and from the city of Yatta, the economic hub of the region.
