AL-KHALIL (HEBRON): A Week in Photos 19-25 April 2015

Below are some of the CPT Palestine’s best photos for the week of 19-25 April, capturing the grim absurdity of the occupation and the spirit of Hebron’s inhabitants.

DIGNITY

Pictured here: This Palestinian shopkeeper’s face personifies what the Palestinians term sumoud, which translates as “stoicism” or “steadfastness.” Hebronites possess this quality in abundance.

PLIGHT OF YOUNG PALESTINIAN

Pictured here: To be a young Palestinian in Hebron is to run the risk of arrest at any given time. This young man was stopped for an ID check when leaving the Ibrahimi Mosque on Friday, held for over 1\2 hour, and then taken to the police station.

A STUDY IN CONTRASTS

Pictured here: These young Hebronites have learned to live with the presence of soldiers hovering over their every move, and are able to almost totally ignore their presence. Nothing will spoil their game.

ARBITRARY USE OF POWER

Pictured here: This young man sits on the street near a check point, having his ID checked by the Border Police, and wondering if he will be detained or arrested at the whim of the Occupation. CPT Palestine has observed 184 arbitrary detentions of Palestinians by Israeli forces from December to March of this year, in less than a mile radius, with nineteen instances of individuals taken into custody.

THAT’S USING YOUR HEAD

Pictured here: Young Palestinian boy helping with chores by shopping for tonight’s dinner. His hands are free in case he runs into a friend who wants to play catch.

FREEDOM OF RELIGION?

Pictured here: These young men leaving the Ibrahimi Mosque after Friday prayer, have already passed at least one checkpoint, many of them have their ID taken before entering the Mosque, and then must wait often up forty-five minutes to collect their ID after prayer. Something to ponder as we easily make our own way to worship each week.

A GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE

Pictured here: Here is a child who has decided to have a bit of fun by turning the tables on this Israeli policeman – and follow him for a change.

Justice will come through people

I have never seen a more hopeful future than I have in the way that Palestinians in Gaza have cared for one another and have shown us what humanity is.
