Chiapas: Delegation Announced for May 24 - June 4
3 April 1998

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) is assembling a delegation to the southern
Mexican state of Chiapas May 24 to June 4. The presence of international
peacemakers is important in light of intensifying militarization of the
state, a rise in paramilitary activity, and intensified government
harassment of international peace workers. On December 22, 1997, a
paramilitary group shot to death 45 unarmed people -- mostly women and
children -- as they prayed during worship. The victims were members of the
Bees, a group of rural Christians who are struggling for justice with the
tools of nonviolence. CPT delegations have met with members of the Bees who
were displaced by paramilitary activity on several occasions. This
delegation is being organized with the encouragement of church workers in
the area and participants will meet with villagers who face violence from
soldiers and paramilitary groups.

Persons interested in participating should contact CPT [at] igc [dot] org. An
application for delegation participation is avialable on the WEB page
