CHICAGO: Update on Threats to CPT

CHICAGO, IL =96 In the wake of telephone death threats received April 5,
Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) staff, Corps members and volunteers are
continuing their work as usual. =20

On Palm Sunday, the Chicago CPT office received a death threat recorded on
the telephone answering machine. The male caller with an Israeli accent
threatened to cause Chicago CPTers "great bodily harm" and kill them if CPT
continued what he characterized as "anti-Semitic activities." =20

No other messages have been received since April 5. Law enforcement
officials from the FBI, the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Chicago
Police Department's Hate Crimes Division have so far been unable to
determine any further information about the caller. It is not clear whether
this call was made by the same person/gropup who issued threatening phone
calls and e-mail messages last January.

For several days following the threatening call, CPT supporters from
northern Indiana and Elgin, IL, accompanied CPT workers at the Chicago
office. "We are grateful for the outpouring of prayers and messages from
supporters, including a =91Life Threat'" said staff member Kryss Chupp.
