CHICAGO: Campaign for Secure Dwellings to have New Coordinator
May 25, 1998

Rich Meyer, Millersburg IN a CPTer who recently spent six weeks with CPT
Hebron will become CPT coordinator for Campaign for Secure Dwellings (CSD).
Meyer replaces Wendy Lehman who developed the project after being denied
entry into Israel in order to join the team in Hebron. CSD is designed to
support Palestinian families who live in homes that are threatened with
demolition. These Palestinian families are matched with families connected
to congregations or other groups in North America.

Meyer lived with the Yussef and Zuhoor Al-Atrash family in a tent for a
month after their home was destroyed on March 3 by Israeli bulldozers. He
worked with the Al-Atrash family and Palestinian neighbors, Israelis and
other CPTers to rebuild the home. The CSD project has matched 21 families
in North America and an equal number of Palestinian families are awaiting
matches. CPT has been contacted by more than 300 congregations or Quaker
meetings seeking information about the process of developing a match with a
Palestinian family. In Hebron many Palestinian families continue to contact
CPT to inquirer about the process for matching with congregations or groups
here in the hope that this regular connection will eventually contribute to
a wider resistance to the policy of home demolitions.
