Hebron: Correction to Wheatfield Arson story
Monday, 29 June 1998
CORRECTION
In a recent CPT release we reported that Ibrahim Abu Jendia, a farmer near
Yatta in the southern West Bank, told the team that last Friday evening
settlers from Ma'on settlement burned his entire wheat crop of 150 dunams.
The team was careful to clarify with Jendia at that time that it happened on
Friday night, and he responded affirmatively.
Numbers of inquires to the team questioned whether this would actually happen
since lighting a fire on Shabbat is a complete violation of Jewish Law. As
one of our Jewish readers noted, "There is nothing in Jewish Law which would
allow such a thing except to a save a life."
We spoke with Jendia again today (June 29) and asked him to clarify yet again
when the fire happened. He said, it happened around 1a.m. Thursday
night/Friday morning -- NOT on the Sabbath, Friday evening.
We sincerely apologize for this misinformation and thank our readers for
raising the question. Settlers did not burn his entire wheat crop on the
Sabbath. They burned it on the night before the Sabbath.
