CPT Organizing Delegations to the Middle East and Chiapas, Mexico

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) calls for volunteers to join CPT-Rebuilders
Against Bulldozers (CPT-RAB) teams to Israel and the West Bank on November
19 - December 1, 1998, and February 3-15, 1999. In addition, peacemakers
are needed for a Chiapas delegation November 19 - December 1, 1998.

MIDDLE EAST
The CPT-RAB delegations come in response to 1,800 Palestinian home
demolitions by Israeli authorities in the last ten years. In recent days,
CPT's Internet mailing list has highlighted the Al-Atrash family, who had
been rebuilding their home after it was demolished on March 3. Their new
home was again demolished on June 11. Joining a CPT-RAB delegation is a way
to get actively involved in opposing house demolitions. The cost of the
CPT-RAB delegations is $1700.

CHIAPAS
In the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, the presence of international
peacemakers is important in light of intensifying militarization of the
state, a rise in paramilitary activity, and intensified government harassment of
international peace workers. The military and paramilitary groups have
displaced 18,000 people from their homes. On December 22, 1997, a
paramilitary group shot to death 45 unarmed people -- mostly women and
children -- as they prayed during worship. The victims were members of the
Bees, a Christian group of nonviolent activists. Members of the last three
CPT Chiapas delegations met with members of The Bees. Delegation members
will learn about the conflict in Chiapas and meet with villagers facing
ongoing violence and harassment from soldiers and paramilitary groups. The
cost of the Chiapas delegation is $1,000.

Delegation fees include international air fare from a designated point in
the U.S., two meals a day, all in-country transportation and housing, and
honorariums.
