widows of PRI (official party) members killed in the months leading up to the
Acteal massacre.

Tuesday, August 18
Cliff Kindy and William Payne went to Tuxtla, the state capital, to look for
US military trainers at the base there- without success. They also met with
Samuel Sanchez Sanchez -local congressperson and leader of the paramilitary
group Desarrollo, Paz y Justicia, active in northern Chiapas.

Thursday, August 20
Police in the highlands of Chiapas began a work stoppage. Among their demands
were better arms. They said, "The paramilitaries have better guns than we
do."

Friday, August 21
Lynn Stoltzfus, Kindy and Payne went to Rancho Nuevo, a large military base,
to try to talk with someone from the military. They were told to go the a
base in San Cristobal. In San Cristobal, they were told that no one there
could talk to them; they should return to Rancho Nuevo. They also told the
team that no one would tell them anything anyway. The US military attaches
visiting Chiapas last month to verify that US weapons are being used to fight
drugs were not allowed into Rancho Nuevo either.

Saturday, August 22
The team traveled to Acteal for the mass commemorating the massacre. About
3-4,000 people were there because of a pilgrimage of 550 people from Christian
Base Communities all across Mexico.

Sunday, August 23
Stoltzfus, Payne and Kindy went to the Presbyterian church in Pechiquil (where
the guns were reportedly blessed before the December massacre). Samuel Perez
Perez preached a sermon on loving enemies from Matthew 5:43-48.

Monday, August 24
Stoltzfus and Kindy went to Moises Gandi autonomous community and met with
several communty leaders.

Families of two police officers killed in a raid on an autonomous community in
June received checks for 60,000 pesos each ($6,000).

Wednesday, August 26
Cliff Kindy and Lynn Stoltzfus visited a refugee camp of Las Abejas (the Bees)
in San Cristobal. They were in Acteal at the time of the massacre and came to
the site in San Cristobal on January 29. They had names of people from the
village they are from who participated in the Acteal massacre, none of whom
are jailed.

A local human rights organization criticized the fact that the state
government has refused to pay the medical bills of those injured in the Acteal
massacre.
