URGENT ACTION: CALL ON CONGRESS TO DEMAND END TO DEMOLITIONS
September 16, 1998
HEBRON URGENT ACTION: CALL ON CONGRESS TO DEMAND AN IMMEDIATE END TO
PALESTINIAN HOME DEMOLITIONS
On September 16, the Atta and Rodeina Jaber family had their home destroyed
for the second time in 27 days. Atta, Rodeina and their three children under
the age of five now have no protection against the coming winter rains.
In the last three weeks, CPT has asked its supporters to write to Israeli and
American officials to protest the demolition of the Atta Jaber house on August
19 and the bulldozing of his father's fruit and olive orchards on September 5.
We believe that more drastic methods are called for now. Hundreds of families
living in the Beqa'a valley will lose their homes, land and livelihoods to
Israeli settlement expansion if some action is not taken to prevent it.
As a beginning to these interventions, we are asking you to visit your
congress people's offices with pictures of the Jaber family and ask that they
register their disapproval of the Israeli government's home demolition policy.
It is especially important for people to visit their senators' offices, since
senators have more direct power in American foreign policy decisions than
representatives do.
Digital pictures of the Jaber family and of their demolished house are
available on the CPT website www.cpt.org. CPT can also provide photos
via e-mail attachments or regular mail. A church bulletin insert will also be
available at the web site, by fax or by regular mail. Contact CPT's Chicago
office (see footer) or Rich Meyer at cptcsd [at] npcc [dot] net.
We ask you to continue to blizzard the Israeli officials at the fax numbers
and e-mail addresses listed below, demanding that the creeping annexation of
the Beqa'a valley, and the land confiscation and home demolitions this
annexation entails, be stopped immediately.
Citizens of the United States should continue to demand that President Clinton
and Madeleine Albright exert the pressure necessary to stop these demolitions
and land confiscations.
Canadian citizens should express their concerns by writing to Ambassador
Gordon Giffin, 100 Wellington St, American Embassy, Ottawa ON K1P 5T1 tel:
613-238-5335 fax 613-234-2094
Faxes will make bigger impression than e-mail.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS
