North Manchester, IN: Peacemaker Congress Calls for Economic Justice
Sept. 25, 1998

Two hundred peacemakers are practicing a back to the basics lifestyle
weekend on a 7 acre organic farm in Northern Indiana. Sleeping in barns and
washing in basins, Christian Peacemaker Congress attenders are attempting to
live out the theme of their conference: "Jubilee Economics." "Witness
against violence is a lot easier for us than witness against economic
injustice," said conference organizer Rich Meyer. "It doesn't require the
same introspection. Economic injustice is something we buy into every day."

Ched Myers, author of "Binding the Strong Man," addressed the group last
night, discussing the "same old story," the powers of oppression and the
call to a new lifestyle that Moses faced in Egypt, Jesus faced in Jerusalem,
and we face today. This morning Sara Reschly continued the theme, sharing
her experiences as a peacemaker in the West Bank working on behalf of
Palestinian families faced with the demolition of their homes by Israeli
occupation forces. The conference attenders will attempt to confront powers
of oppression this afternoon when they hold a public witness to demand the
end of these home demolitions at the offices of Senator Richard Lugar in
Fort Wayne.
