Ft. Wayne, IN: RUBBLE AND LETTERS
Sept. 26, 1998

200 Christian Peacemaker Congress participants piled rubble on the steps in
front of the office of Senator Lugar in downtown Ft. Wayne yesterday. The
CPTers sent a delegtion into the Senator's office to enlist his help in
ending the demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank. Names of
Palestinian families whose homes had been made into rubble as part of the
Israeli government's systematic displacement of Palestinians were read.
Many of the participatns had spent time in the West Bank and knew families
who had recently lost their homes.

"If anybody can change U.S. policy, Senator Lugar is that person," said
conference organizer Cliff Kindy. Lugar a ranking Republican has taken
leadership on international human rights issues in the past. His office
indicated it could advocate change in the West Bank if there is clear
evidence of support from the public for the Palestinian cause. An offering
of letters and cards is being developed at the Peacemaker Congress. The
Congress has called for an upsurg of letters to members of Congress and
visits to Congressional offices on behalf of Palestinians.
