Lesvos| Fatal fires at Moria camp

In late afternoon Sunday 29 September 2019, two fires broke out around Moria camp. One reportedly started outside the camp, and was put out within minutes. The other happened in the camp, either inside or close to a container, and rapidly escalated. At the time of this writing, 49-year-old Faride Tajik is confirmed to have died, and the number of injured stands at least at 17.

Pray for the people confined to the Aegean islands during the winter months. Showers are falling on migrants who live in tents and containers on Lesvos. Rapidly flowing streams are coursing down between their small tents in the olive grove. Migrants are left to fend for themselves. They have to be creative and use the garbage that they find in the surrounding area to winterise their shelters and protect themselves from the cold, the damp, and the rain. 

LESVOS: Harvesting Tears In Moria

We were walking through the village of Moria on Lesvos when we saw thick smoke rising in the distance from an area close to the concentration camp of Moria. Along the way we saw migrants, mainly from Afghanistan, who were walking slowly in the opposite direction. I asked some of them where the smoke was coming from. “Some tent that has caught fire I guess,” one answered. “Is the fire inside the camp?” I asked another migrant, “I suppose so,” he replied
