Prayers for Peacemakers, December 9, 2015

Give thanks that Canada is finally launching a national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Pray for the inquiry to be fully equipped, empowered and lead by the families, and that it will bring Canada's legacy of colonial misogyny into the light.

*Epixel for Third Sunday in Advent, December 13, 2015

From a February 2014 March for Murdered and Missing Women and Girls.

 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflicts you: and I will save her who is lame,
and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land
 where they have been put to shame.

At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you:
for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth,
when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, says the Lord.  Zephaniah 3:19-20 KJV (adapted)

Prayers for Peacemakers, December 2, 2015

Pray for the communities of Garzal and Nueva Esperanza.  They have petitioned the head of INCODER—the Colombian government agency in charge of rural land management—asking for representatives to visit the area to verify and resolve of the issues surrounding the granting of titles and ownership to land.   INCODER returned sixty-four stolen land titles in 2013, and promised to complete their land process the following year, but the communities continue to wait—and face pressures from powerful people who want their land, and who have corrupt local authorities on their side.

    'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight,
    and the rough ways made smooth;
and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" Luke 3:4-6

The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.
In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness."  Jeremiah 33: 14-16

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD rescues them from them all.
He keeps all their bones; not one of them will be broken.
Evil brings death to the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The LORD redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

 5:7 Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground!

5:10 They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth.

5:11 Therefore because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

5:12 For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins-- you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate.

Prayers for Peacemakers, September 2, 2015

Pray for Veronica, a Mexican human rights lawyer who stopped by the CPT office for lunch after she relocated to Chicago in the wake of serious threats to her safety because of  her advocacy on behalf of Mexican farmers whose land was targeted for confiscation by multinational corporations. Her struggle mirrors that of CPT's partners.  Pray for CPT's partner communities in Colombia and Iraqi Kurdistan who are also resisting violence generated by multinational resource extraction corporations.

The rich and the poor have this in common: the LORD is the maker of them all.

Whoever sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of anger will fail.

Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor.

Do not rob the poor because they are poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate;

for the LORD pleads their cause and despoils of life those who despoil them.
Proverbs 22:2, 8-9, 22-23

Prayers for Peacemakers, July 30, 2015 Iraqi Kurdistan

Prayers for Peacemakers, July 30, 2015     Iraqi Kurdistan

Pray for the Kurdish villagers living in the mountainous border regions between Iraqi Kurdistan and Turkey. In 2012, Turkey and the Kurdish resistance entered into a delicate truce.  The bombing ended in the area where the villagers of Basta live. They rejoiced and put money into building a new mosque with the hope that people would come back to the village. This week the bombing started again.

 The LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him,
"There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.

The rich man had very many flocks and herds;
but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had
bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children;
 it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his
 bosom,  and it was like a daughter to him.

Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of
his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him,
but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared that for the guest
 who had come  to him."

Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan,
"As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die;

he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because
 he had no pity."

Nathan said to David, "You are the man!  2 Samuel 12: 1-7

Prayers for Peacemakers, July 22, 2015

Give thanks that Medecins Sans Frontiers has begun providing bus transportation for arriving refugees on the island of Lesvos, so that they don't need to walk the 70 km distance from arrival points on the north coast to the registration centre in Mytiline.  Pray for CPT-Europe’s work with this summer on Lesvos among the people who have risked incredibly dangerous journeys to reach the island. More than 90 percent of the 77,000 people who have arrived on the Greek islands in the first six months of 2015 are fleeing countries experiencing war and conflict, principally Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.
