Prayers for Peacemakers, 24 August 2017

Thanksgiving and prayer of blessing for ten people who recently graduated from the CPT training for peacemakers.

Let us give thanks for the ten wonderful people who successfully accomplished and graduated from the month-long intensive CPT Training for Peacemakers. Their peacemaking journeys will continue on various CPT teams and/or in their home communities around the world.

The training was a beautiful and deeply transforming experience and yet by no means easy. The experiential training sessions require presence and engagement of one's whole being and willingness to be transformed. The graduates experienced a number of difficult situations and processes both individually and growing together as a community. One person had to leave the training abruptly, another dealt with an unexpected painful health condition. The trainees were missing five other people who could not come due to oppressive visa policies or personal circumstances. And yet today we celebrate with ten peacemakers from Brazil, Uruguay, Czech republic, Germany, Canada and the U.S.A. who have successfully accomplished the training and will go forth into the world to practice and share what they had learned. As we pray, let us ask for blessing and divine guidance on their new ways, returns to home communities and transitions to new life and work with CPT.

This was the 48th training that Christian Peacemaker Teams has organized and held during its 31 years of existence. Over 500 people have trained to join the organization and to strengthen their peacemaking skills. We are deeply grateful for everyone committed to this journey of peacemaking, for all who participate either in the trainings or in making them possible through numerous ways of support and accompaniment of prayer.

CPT UNITED STATES: Christian Peacemaker Teams supports clergy and community members in Charlottesville through trainings in nonviolent action

by Sarah Thompson

On behalf of the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) community, first and foremost we want to extend our condolences to the families of the victims of violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Though Trump’s denouncement of the horrendous “Unite the Right” rally on 12 August 2017 was weak, the Charlottesville community’s response was very strong. From clergy to anti-fascist (Antifa) mobilizers to street medics to students, they all came together to confront the misdirected anger and brutalizing violence of the ultra-nationalist right wing—mostly young white men were in attendance—in the United States.

Already in July, the local clergy group knew they needed more reinforcement and training to prepare for the violence their city would experience at the hands of white supremacists on 12 August.

IRAQI KURDISTAN: KRG Authorities Prevent CPT from Conducting a Public Action

Iraqi Kurdistan: KRG Authorities Prevent CPT from Conducting a Public Action
by Rebaz K. Mohammed, CPT Trainee, Sulaimani-Iraq

Asaysh (security) department in Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, denied approval for a group of CPT trainees to conduct a public action in solidarity with the government employees. The action was to take place in Azadi (freedom) Park, Sulaimani, on the February 19, 2016.

After the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan (KRG) failed to pay public-sector employees’ salaries for the last 5 months, a number of public sector employees in Sulaimani went on a strike demanding their rights in salaries. The strike included, but not limited to, teachers, traffic police, and doctors.

The 2016 CPT-training group in Sulaimani prepared a public action to demonstrate their appreciation for the hard work the employees have done without pay for such a long time, and at the same time, to show support for the employees’ demand for their rights. This would have been demonstrated through a short theatrical performance by the trainees, with the support of the CPT team in Sulaimani.

Prayers for Peacemakers, March 17, 2016

We give thanks for the peacemakers-in-training in Iraqi Kurdistan, who recently passed the halfway mark of their training. We ask for endurance and fortitude for all involved in this training, as the group shares skills, learns history, and experiments with peacemaking and justice-seeking in this specific context.

Isaiah 43:19
I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.

I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.
The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me.

Prayers for Peacemakers, November 4, 2015

Give thanks for the ten new Peacemakers who have successfully completed the 2015 Christian Peacemaker Teams training.  Pray that the Creator will work within them to give them the strength and courage they will need to do the difficult and rewarding work of peacebuilding with our partners in Colombia, Iraqi Kurdistan, Palestine and Indigenous communities.
