Since the death of Hadeel Hashlamoon (18) in Hebron on September 22nd, the physical violence of this decades-long occupation has escalated to an alarming extent.  Addressing the UN, Abbas has stated that the human rights situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories is “the worst and most critical since 1948“.

The Palestinian Health Ministry announced that the Palestinian death toll since October 1st sits at 69, with 52 dead in Jerusalem and the West Bank, and 17 dead in Gaza – including unarmed protesters, bystanders, alleged attackers and an 8-month old baby. Stating that Israel has “ripped up the rulebook”, implementing “extreme and unlawful measures”, Amnesty International is declaring these deaths ‘extrajudicial executions’. Video evidence refutes many claims of ‘alleged attack’. Also as a result of the violence, frustration and despair of this occupation, nine Israelis have been killed in stabbing or shooting incidents by Palestinians. Haftom Zarhum, an Eritrean asylum seeker, was also lynched by Israeli forces and civilians this month.

According to the ministry, the number of wounded Palestinians sits at well over 2,000, with 900 wounded from live fire, roughly 880 from rubber bullets, 206 from physical blows, and 14 from burns. The ministry also stated that over 5,000 people have suffered tear gas inhalation. On 29.10.15 the Israeli military announced over a loud speaker in Aida refugee camp that “we will hit you with gas until you die. The children, the youth, and the old people, all of you – we won’t spare any of you”. The following day an 8-month old baby named Ramadan Mohammad Faisal Thawabta died from excessive teargas inhalation. 

These are not just numbers, these are sons, daughters, brothers and sisters.

According to data from the families, Israel is currently holding the bodies of 16 of these murdered Palestinians.

  14. Muhammad Faris al-Jaabari (19)

    We pray for the families of all of those murdered in Israel and Palestine this dark and bloody month as they navigate the searing pain of grief.
     
    We pray that the bodies of those Palestinians being held by Israel are returned to their families swiftly.

    We pray for a just peace.

    The Walk to School

    In the first ten school days of October, Israeli forces fired more than 143 teargas canisters as Palestinian children walked to and from school, as well as five stun grenades, from two military checkpoints in H2 Hebron (approximately 0.3 miles apart). Two Palestinian children in this area were hospitalised as a result of excessive teargas inhalation on their walk to school on 12.10.15. On 8.10.15 Israeli forces fired 81 teargas canisters at school children. On two of those ten days, Israeli forces also fired rubber-coated steel bullets into a crowd of children (rubber-coated steel bullets can be lethal, for example killing 13 year-old Ahamd Sharaka near Ramallah in the second week of October). Furthermore, Israeli forces ambushed and arrested two boys aged 11 and 12 after school in Hebron on 13.10.15. To read our full article, and see video links, click here.

    CPTer Arrested

    Israeli forces and a settler shot dead three Palestinian young people on the streets of Hebron on Saturday 17 October 2015: Bayan Ayman Abd al-Hadi al-Esseili, 17, Fadil Qawasmi, 18, and Tariq Ziyad al-Natshe, 20.  And I was arrested for taking an Instagram photo two weeks earlier.

    With three youth killed  and settlers literally celebrating in the blood of Fadil Qawasmi, executed by a settler, it is perhaps little surprise that those with cameras slung over shoulders are increasingly coming under threat.

    Sitting in a cold room for hours, without access to a lawyer, I watched my beloved camera slammed on a table. Meanwhile, authorities at the base told my colleague I was not there. One of my photos, I was told, rendered me a threat to the ‘security of Israel.’

    An Instagram photo? Me? A threat to one of the most powerful states in the world? The threat here? The truth.
