Counter-Settler Tour

Pictured here: CPT monitored its first counter-settler tour created in partnership with a local tour guide.  The tour takes place at the same time as the weekly settler incursion in the Old City, offering a narrative of Palestinian history and culture in al-Khalil and explaining the impact of occupation on daily life, economy, and freedom.  Members of our CPT delegation were the main participants last week.  A future goal of the project is to draw more Palestinians into the space of the Old City to raise awareness about resistance to the occupation.

Sound Bombs

Pictured here:  An Israeli Border Policeman throws a sound bomb towards Palestinian youth during clashes on Monday.  In support of the Palestinian political prisoners’ hunger strike, al-Khalil and other cities across the West Bank participated in a general strike.  All businesses, schools, and transportation services were closed.  The number of clashes has increased over the last weeks in conjunction with many strikes and demonstrations in support of the hunger strikers and their demands for rights and dignity.  In this clash, CPT reported that the Israeli military and border police fired 50 sound bombs, over 12 tear gas canisters, 9 rubber bullets, and at least 2 rounds of live ammunition.

Under Arrest

Pictured here: An 18-year-old boy is arrested during a clash on Friday, 26th May. Israeli security forces continue to use clashes as a way to isolate, photograph, and arrest young Palestinians.  Locals reported four other young men were arrested the same day.

Searched

Pictured here: Israeli soldiers force two men to vacate their car in order to conduct a search.  Regular patrols of the Old City continue as body searches, ID checks, and invasion of personal property are used to restrict the movement of Palestinians.  As Ramadan begins and crowds fill the streets in celebration, Israeli military uses patrols to further harass and control the local community.
