Twenty meters to go,<br \/>\nshe slows her pace, pulls her younger brother close to her side, placing her<br \/>\nbody between the soldiers and the boy. With one of her eyes on the soldiers and<br \/>\none on her brother they squeeze through the gate together and run home with<br \/>\ntheir daily allotment from the soup kitchen in hand. What have we done? Why do<br \/>\nthe soldiers watch us? What will we be accused of? What are we guilty of that<br \/>\nwe are watched, checked, searched?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy son is in prison,\u201d says the Palestinian father to our<br \/>\nCPT team. He continues, \u201cMy son, this one\u2019s son also, and his too, and another<br \/>\nwhose father is also in prison. Over six months and they are still in prison,\u201d<br \/>\nthe father states. We sit in solidarity with the families. One of the sons, now<br \/>\non hunger strike for twelve days, seeks his release that the Palestinian courts<br \/>\nhave already issued, yet with no results, so these families gather to wait, to<br \/>\nhope, to pray and to bring awareness to the injustice suffered by Palestinian<br \/>\nprisoners.<\/p>\n<p>I* can\u2019t help but wonder when this prison sentence truly<br \/>\nbegan. Was it six months ago? Was it the day the judge slammed the gavel and<br \/>\ndeclared, \u201cguilty as charged\u201d? Or, I wonder, was it perhaps that day on the<br \/>\nstreet when his big sister reached out, pulling him close trying to protect him<br \/>\nfrom the intimidating glare of the soldier, the accusing stare that suggests<br \/>\nwith the power of self-declared superiority a verdict of guilty. Was that the<br \/>\nday the sentence was handed down, a day before any act was committed, any act<br \/>\nbesides being Palestinian, any act besides being Arab, any act besides being<br \/>\nsomething other than what the occupier is?<\/p>\n<p>As long as there is an occupying force, \u201cmy son is in<br \/>\nprison,\u201d is a statement that every Palestinian parent in the West Bank can make<br \/>\nwith legitimacy.\u00a0It<br \/>\nis a sentence handed down without trial, without defense, a sentence based on<br \/>\nracism, ugly prejudice, and a desire to separate, eliminate and castigate<br \/>\nbased on injustice and self-declared superiority.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sun rises in the east. It is a new day in Palestine. An<br \/>\neight-year-old Palestinian child nears the checkpoint. She slows her pace,<br \/>\ndraws her sibling close, trying to protect him from the verdict of the<br \/>\nself-declared superiority of the occupier. It\u2019s a new day, but not the day we<br \/>\nawait, not the day we hope for, not the day we pray for and not the new day we<br \/>\nwork for. An eight-year-old Palestinian child nears the checkpoi\u2026 \u2014wait\u2014 \u2026 the<br \/>\nplace where the checkpoint used to be.
