Prayers

Prayers for Peacemakers 1 January 2020

We pray that the victims of systematic violence, as well as their families and communities, may find the truth, peace, restitution and justice they deserve after spending more than 60 years in conflict. We pray for the members of the Congress who have an important task to protect and guarantee the victim's rights and allow the transitional justice to interact with ongoing laws in order to fulfill guarantees for reparation and non-repetition.

Prayers for Peacemakers, 18 December 2019

Please pray for the asylum seekers waiting in Agua Prieta, Sonora who are knocking on the doors of the U.S. asking to come in from the cold and the hunger and the sickness and the violence.  Pray for the volunteers from both countries who are providing support for these people.  Pray for the U.S. Customs workers who stand at the door, and pray for U.S. government officials that they might find a way to provide welcome.

Prayers for Peacemakers 11 December 2019  Turtle Island

We give thanks for the years of advocacy and relationship-building work of the Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority. We are grateful for the cultural vitality of Indigenous Nations across Turtle Island, who maintain the spiritual and cultural traditions of mutual respect and with Creation and with other nations. With Christian communities around with world celebrating Advent III (Joy), we share our grateful joy at a successful harvest uninterrupted by non-Indigenous protestors.

Prayers for Peacemakers  7 November 2019   Turtle Island

We give thanks for the life of Chief Simon Fobister whose Grassy Narrows community remembered him in a memorial dinner last week.  To the very end of his life, Fobister fought for justice—calling on the Ontario and Federal governments to recognize the damage that mercury poisoning had done to Grassy Narrows demanding they follow through on their promises to clean it out of the waterways and provide treatment for the survivors.  As members of Grassy Narrows continue to feel the effects of mercury poisoning, including Chief Fobister's children, we pray for their healing and for the Canadian government to at last honor its word and build a mercury treatment center.

Prayers for Peacemakers 30 October 2019 U.S./Mexico Borderlands

This shelter, sitting on the Mexican side of the border wall at the U.S. port of entry, is the last stop for people who have come to Agua Prieta, Sonora, to seek asylum in the US.  The campamento—or camp—is the end of a weeks’-long, or even months’-long journey.  Now these people live at the shelter, waiting for their turn to request asylum.  That wait took seven to ten days last summer but has now stretched to twice that long as the U.S. customs officials accept fewer and fewer people.  In addition, because of pressure from the Mexican authorities, people will soon no longer be able to sleep in the camp.
