Prayers for Peacemakers 30 October 2019 U.S./Mexico Borderlands

This shelter, sitting on the Mexican side of the border wall at the U.S. port of entry, is the last stop for people who have come to Agua Prieta, Sonora, to seek asylum in the US.  The campamento—or camp—is the end of a weeks’-long, or even months’-long journey.  Now these people live at the shelter, waiting for their turn to request asylum.  That wait took seven to ten days last summer but has now stretched to twice that long as the U.S. customs officials accept fewer and fewer people.  In addition, because of pressure from the Mexican authorities, people will soon no longer be able to sleep in the camp.

Prayers for Peacemakers 2 October 2019  U.S./Mexico Borderlands

Please pray for patience on the part of asylum seekers trying to enter the U.S.  They bear great anxieties for themselves and their families as they think about what they fled, and what they will do if they are denied entry.  Please pray for empathy and understanding on the part of customs officers at the border.  Help them to consider carefully the violence and living conditions these asylum seekers have left behind.

Prayers for Peacemakers 21 August 2019 U.S./Mexico Borderlands

Please pray for a conversion of hearts among all those who prey upon the migrants seeking asylum along the U.S./Mexico border. At the Agua Prieta MX/Douglas AZ crossing, migrants—primarily from Mexico but also from countries in Central and South America and all the way from Russia—come to their final destination before crossing into the U.S. where they hope they will be safe.

Prayers for Peacemakers 7 August 2019 United States

We pray for the families who lost loved ones in mass shootings of the last two weeks in Canoga Park and Gilroy, California; in Brooklyn, NY; in Chicago, IL; in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; in El Paso, TX, Dayton, OH, and other locations.  We pray for the healing of physical and mental trauma for the injured and the survivors.  We pray for a healing of white supremacy in the United States—in the halls of power, in the media, in the education system—everywhere it has taken root, for racism is inextricably bound with current gun culture in the U.S.

Prayers for Peacemakers, 3 July 2019  Borderlands

Pray for all those detained in concentration camps at the U.S./Mexico Border and in other U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Facilities.  Give thanks for those who are trying to shine a light on the racist and misogynistic Border Patrol culture that is threatening the lives and the health of the children, women and men held in these camps.  Inspire people on the outside to find creative ways to confront and overturn this evil, before it turns into something worse.

Borderlands: Resisting walls

Walls take many forms. They may be words, glances, or actions that distance us from others, or physical structures that protect us from the weather or the vulnerable from further harm.  But the walls we saw at the Arizona/Mexico border, on the Christian Peacemaker Teams borderlands delegation, were made of concrete, metal, or stone, or even from threats, meant to deprive people of their rights or shut out the tired, the poor, the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free”—as the message on the Statue of Liberty says at a port of entry in the Eastern United States.
