We, as Community Peacemaker Teams – Palestine, strongly condemn the Israeli occupation’s attack on Jenin, which has resulted in the loss of more than nine Palestinian lives and left dozens injured so far. The re-emergence of air attacks reminiscent of the second intifada is profoundly alarming and represents a significant escalation of violence. The targeting of civilians and the disproportionate use of force in Jenin is a grave violation of human rights and international law. We express our heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people during this tragic time.

While Community Peacemaker Teams (CPT) advocates and supports nonviolent grassroots resistance, it is crucial to acknowledge and affirm the right of Palestinians to defend themselves against the Israeli occupation. International Humanitarian Law (IHL) recognizes the right of parties involved in an armed conflict to use force in self-defence against military aggression. Palestinians living under occupation have the inherent right to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from harm and to resist the occupation by any means they deem necessary.

We call on the international community to bear its responsibility in addressing the situation in Jenin. The international community must uphold its commitment to human rights, justice, and the principles of IHL. We urge diplomatic efforts and international pressure to bring an end to the Israeli occupation.

The Israeli military attacks and Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians exhibit a disturbing level of organization and coordination, with both actions serving a common goal. These actions are not isolated incidents but reflect systematic policies and practices that aim to suppress Palestinian resistance, instill fear, displace communities, and assert control over land.

It is imperative that the voices of the Palestinian people are heard and their rights recognized. The cycle of violence and suffering must be broken, and a comprehensive resolution that respects the rights and aspirations of Palestinians must be sought. The international community must support efforts to ensure the realization of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, freedom, and justice.
