May Vastria never exist

Vastria camp under construction

In Lesvos island, the proposed new camp for migrants, Vastria, would be a monument to injustice. Built in a fire-prone forest, it would endanger both the land and those trapped inside. It would stand as a symbol of Europe’s border policies, that would turn away those fleeing war, hunger and persecution. It would not be a place of refuge but of confinement, designed to isolate and control.

The voices of Lesvos have spoken against it. They fear for their island, their forests, and their dignity. The courts may delay its opening, but the government pushes forward. It ignores the lessons of Moria, of Idomeni, of the countless tragedies at sea.

This prison must not stand. Every delay should grow, every legal battle should succeed, and every attempt to finish this project should collapse under its own weight. Those who want to build it should abandon their plans, those who fund it should withdraw their support, and those who defend it should recognise the harm they would cause.

May justice prevail, and may this place never exist.
