This week, Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, is inviting the global elite to descend on Toronto for the inaugural “Canada Investment Summit”. Over 100 global financiers have been invited to invest in projects across Canada, namely pipelines and resource extraction industries. In an April CBC interview, Michel Leduc, senior managing director and chief public affairs officer at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which will host the meeting, bragged, “Canada is cool again.”
This summit is happening against a backdrop of climate-driven environmental degradation. For the fourth summer in a row, the skies of Toronto turned orange from forest fire smoke as entire Indigenous communities burned to the ground in Northern Ontario. Within this dystopian reality, the summit brags that it will bring stability to a volatile world, yet it is these investors and their decisions that fuel global volatility.
This summer, CPT has published articles about how industry is poisoning the land and Indigenous communities, contributing to settler domination and genocide. If you haven’t had a chance to read them, here are some recent writings from the Turtle Island Solidarity Network:
