Iraq: Makhmoor Refugee Camp: “We Just Want Peace”

The month of April saw a sharp increase in human rights abuses by the Turkish government against the Kurds, including the sentencing of the Makhmoor camp’s peace delegation from last October. 

CPT delegation members met with families of the peace delegation.  The mothers, brothers, fathers, sons, husbands, and wives asked, “Is it too much to ask for basic rights?”  They told delegates, “We just want peace,” and expressed their willingness to risk death or imprisonment in pursuit of human rights for Kurds in Turkish Kurdistan.

On the eighth anniversary of the EU-Turkey Statement, we denounce Turkey and EU states’ consistent failure to uphold their international obligations with regard to migrants and refugees, and strengthen our joint commitment to challenge all official and unofficial policies that lead to the discrimination, segregation, and ultimately exclusion of migrants.
