People hold up signs at a protest

Earlier last month, an independent journalist was attacked by military forces in Iraqi Kurdistan, most likely due to work surrounding his journalism. Speaking out against corruption is often met with violence. Speaking out for your rights is met with brutality. Speaking out for better public services is met with indifference. Speaking out for what is right is met with oppression.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, the government can be brutally oppressive against demonstrators and activists who criticize the government. Community Peacemaker Teams, alongside other local civil society groups, seek to protect the rights of journalists and activists in their struggle. People grow tired of the corruption, lack of services, constant bombardments by Turkey, and oppression for speaking out.

Pray for the people speaking out. Pray for the brave people. Pray for the people resisting and protecting their homeland. Pray for peace.
