Shabbat Protection

Pictured here: An Israeli soldier in the background guards settlers on their way to the synagogue for Shabbat prayers. Every Shabbat there is an increase in military presence for the protection of the settlers. Unfortunately that increased presence also often means increased restrictions and harassment for Palestinians who live in the neighbourhoods the settlers walk through.

Tree Planting

Pictured here: Youth Against Apartheid processed from Tel Rumeida to Qurtuba School for tree planting ceremony. They were closely followed by eighteen Israeli soldiers. The soldiers did not interfere with the planting.

School Project

Pictured here: A couple of boys on their way to school in the morning, one carrying a school work project. It may seem an unremarkable scene; however given the stress and intimidation of the occupation, every time children continue to go to school, it is a sign that life exists in the midst of it all.

Arrested

Pictured here: A nineteen-year-old Palestinian woman was stopped on her way through Salaymeh checkpoint. The Israeli Border Police proceeded to pin her against the wall while they searched her bag, and then marched her down the street to the Israeli police station. The police station she was taken to for her arrest is in an area where Palestinians are not allowed to reach. On this particular day the Border Police declared it a closed Military Zone to prevent CPT from following further.

Occupying the Youngest

Pictured here: A Palestinian mother carries her small baby through Qitoun checkpoint. For the baby’s protection, she had the Israeli Border Police turn off the metal detector before she walked through. Even the youngest Palestinians are not exempt from going through checkpoints.

A Better View for the Occupier

Pictured here: The construction at Salaymeh checkpoint continues. This week, the workers moved the soldier tower from the side of the hill to the top of the new container. CPTers and other human rights defenders are concerned for what the new checkpoint will mean for those who have to pass. As best we can tell, observing the interaction between soldiers and anyone passing through, particularly school children, is going to be near impossible.
