A dingy full of people float in the sea

Lately, we’ve been witnessing a tragic story repeating itself. During the winter, when the weather turns harsh, the flow of migrants attempting to cross the sea borders to reach Greece increases. This happens because, in stormy conditions, they have a higher chance of avoiding pushbacks, as the Greek Coast Guard patrols less frequently. However, this choice puts their lives at immense risk, as the boats they use are often poorly constructed and unfit for such journeys.

In the past two weeks, at least three shipwrecks have occurred near the Greek islands, leading to devastating losses. People, both young and old, drowned while seeking a better future in Europe. The stance of governments and those in power toward these people is disheartening. They are the same forces that initiate wars and create massive migration waves, yet they also choose to drown, reject, and erase these individuals instead of protecting them. They believe they are the strong ones, while others are weak.

But we must not let them believe this. We must stand against this injustice. We are obligated to stand by migrants, build networks of solidarity, and raise our voices every time a tragedy occurs. We need to protest every shipwreck and every life lost. Only through action, solidarity, and unrelenting pressure can there be hope for change. We must refuse to remain silent.

Let us all pray together, from every corner of the world, for open borders, free movement, and a world of equality, solidarity, and justice. Let us hope that no more lives will be lost and for a world where every person has the place they deserve.
