Lives at Risk

Pictured here: A young Palestinian boy has to navigate the dangers of crossing the road from the checkpoint to school as Israeli settlers drive at great speed around the corner. This road cuts right through Palestinian neighbourhoods connecting Israeli settlements in the Old City to Kiryat Arba and beyond. The road is part of 12kms of the road in and around the Old City that Palestinians are not allowed to drive on but Israeli settlers are completely free to drive on without care or attention to Palestinians walking on it.

Disproportionate use of Force

Pictured here: Twenty-two Israeli soldiers pour out from Check Point 56/Shuhada into Bab Al Zaweyeh pushing journalists and foreign monitors out of the streets in pursuit of approximately a dozen young men who had earlier thrown stones towards the six soldiers stationed on the rooftop. Soldiers fired five sound grenades from the rooftop some of which they aimed directly at human rights observers.

Intimidating Presence

Pictured here: A market stall holder in the Old City once more has his day interrupted by Israeli soldiers randomly checking Palestinian IDs. He is surrounded by six soldiers who demand he stops what he is doing and hand over his ID, which is then photographed. Afterwards, the soldiers continued to move throughout the market as an intimidating presence.

Abuse of Power

Pictured here: Two boys on their way to school who have just come through Qitoun checkpoint are called back by the Border Police to show the contents of their school bags.

School resumed on January 21st and everyday teachers ( and other adults) who regularly use Qitoun checkpoint have had their ID checked. Accumulative delays for adult ID checks have schoolchildren waiting for ten minutes or more in the freezing cold and wet making them late for school.

Beaten by Israeli Soldiers

Pictured here: This 12-year-old boy was physically assaulted by Israeli soldiers resulting in bruising and abrasions on the right side of his face. Prior to his attack, fifty soldiers spread out through neighbourhoods of Qitoun and Salayme invading homes and the Ibrahimiyye School looking for this one child. Why did the Israeli military do this? Because this boy had the audacity to climb a fence that imprisons him and separates him not only from a Jewish only street but from other Palestinian neighbourhoods.

Resistance and Resilience

Pictured here: Jamal is one of the friendly faces of shopkeepers that greets us every day in the Souq, He has been coming to the Souq since he was seven years old when his father owned the shop. Because of the presence of the Israeli Military and Israeli settlers, Jamal has seen the Old City change from a vibrant place teaming with people to a ghost town. He, like many of the other shopkeepers, spend hours at their shops without selling anything. His shop is immediately below the settlement of Avraham Avinu and he has had goods destroyed by settlers throwing excrement and garbage down onto his goods.
Despite everything, Jamal endures he still offers all a friendly smile, a hot cup of tea and good conversation.
