AL KHALIL: Soldier shoots, kills teenager on birthday

On Wednesday 12 December an Israeli
soldier shot and killed 17 year-old Muhammad Ziad Awad Salaymah at the Al Sahlah
checkpoint, near the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron. It was Muhammad’s
birthday.

There are conflicting reports about the cause of
the tragedy, but Israeli police are alleging that the young man was carrying a
fake pistol, which he pointed at Israeli soldiers. Muhammad’s father collapsed
at the scene of the shooting, and was taken to hospital.

After the shooting CPTers visited his home.
Israeli soldiers had entered the house and had trashed the rooms, adding to the
family’s distress.

As news of the shooting spread, many
Palestinians began to vent their anger in confrontations with the Israeli
military, who responded with tear-gas and percussion grenades.

The protests have continued today, with
disturbances at the Qitoun checkpoint, and, following the funeral, at Bab
iZaweyya, a major intersection in Hebron.
