AL-KHALIL (HEBRON) A week in photos January 10- January 16

Constant Hassle

Pictured here: Using the pretext of “security”, Israeli soldiers stop and search this Palestinian as he walks along the Old City street. In groups of six, the Israeli soldiers periodically patrol the Old City streets. The sole purpose of these patrols is to intimidate the Palestinians who live, work or shop there. Daily life for Palestinians in the Old City becomes a constant hassle.

Daily Humiliation

Pictured here:  Israeli soldiers stop a young Palestinian on his way to shop in the Souq without any reason. Soldiers often stop young Palestinians for ID checks as a form of intimidation and just to make daily life and ordinary activities difficult. Their goal is to make life so difficult that local Palestinians leave the area.

Identity

Pictured here: A haunting moment of truth captured. An image showing the small ID document which holds the strong identity of Palestinians, yet symbolizes the control Israel snatches from and forces onto the Palestinian population. Their identity hasn’t been lost, despite the efforts the Israeli soldiers make daily.

Blocking Work

Pictured here: Palestinian workers must often go through checkpoints to get to their work sites as they move materials from one part of the City to another. These Israeli checkpoints greatly increase the time necessary to do building construction and repairs and means supplies can’t be directly taken to the site by car.

“Wait”

Pictured here: The disruptive Saturday settler “tour” was much larger than the past weeks, with at least 70 Israeli’s and roughly 30 soldiers. The soldiers were more forceful in the way they denied passage to Palestinians walking by, forcing many to wait in dark alleyways. They also forced Palestinians to change their route completely, even after indicating they didn’t know the way.

Results of forgetting you ID

Pictured here: A 20 year old Palestinian man was detained for 3 hours for not having his Palestinian ID on him. The soldiers beat him with their guns and kicked him, and his wrists were bruised from being tied for three hours.

Justice will come through people

I have never seen a more hopeful future than I have in the way that Palestinians in Gaza have cared for one another and have shown us what humanity is.
