AL-KHALIL (HEBRON)
A week in photos January 24- January 30

It Rained

Pictured here: Local mosque worshipers leave Friday services via stepping stones because of deep water flowing in the street. A river of street water forms a lake in the Old Town. Israelis do not allow Palestinian workers to update the sewer system as it leaves the Old City to cross Shuhadah Street, which is off-limits to Palestinians. The Israeli Occupation inflicts one more “difficulty” on Old City Palestinians.

Child Harassment / Arrest

Pictured here: A group of 6 Israeli soldiers stopped a 14 years old boy on an Old City street and arrested him around 8:30pm claiming that he threw stones. Four of the soldiers wrestled the boy to the ground and attempted to tie his hands behind his back with a plastic tie, but finally hauled him to their base with a soldier holding him on either side. The soldiers strictly forbade the taking of pictures of the incident, so this only shows onlookers watching him disappear through the locked gate. “As the violence of the occupation escalates, the Israeli forces are even more concerned about negative publicity.” Read more

ID Number or Plate Number?

Pictured here: A group of Israeli soldiers walking in the Old City of Hebron, stopping people and checking their IDs. Eventually, they took a confiscated license plate with them and returned to their military base.

Construction Equipment Waits at Checkpoint

Pictured here: Construction equipment like this backhoe and frontloader often needs to go from one part of the city to another. The equipment must wait for authorization before the Israeli soldiers manning checkpoints allow it to pass, even when the same equipment and the same operators pass several times a week. Workers lose valuable time each day.

Vacation is Over

Pictured here: The last two weeks have been school winter vacation. Now it’s back to school and back to passing through the ever-present checkpoints with always the possibility of being stopped for ID check, school bag check and body search.
