AL KHALIL (HEBRON): A week in photos 19-25 December 2017

Continuation of Peaceful Resistance

Pictured here: “Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine” reads the signs above. Peaceful demonstrations continue in al-Khalil and around the entire state of Palestine. Though every demonstration is met with the constant use of military force by Israel, Palestinians will not be silenced.

Uneven Ground

Economic Downturn

Pictured here: The events of the last several weeks have significantly impacted the economy in cities across Palestine. While many tourists still made the trip to the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem during the Christmas season, very few stayed for long in occupied Palestine. Hotels in Bethlehem that were full and had waiting lists had nearly empty floors on Christmas due to the number of cancellations. In al-Khalil, shopkeepers open their shops in the morning and by afternoon are still waiting for customers to come. This is a continuation of the regular economic impact of the occupation, as shops have, for years, been forced to close by Israeli occupation forces, and many have seen the decline of a once thriving economic centre.

Celebrating

Pictured here: The Old City Women’s Group just opened the Hebron Tastes Kitchen, a culinary space to teach foreigners and the people of al-Khalil the skills and beauty that happen in a Palestinian kitchen. Pictured here boys perform dabke, a traditional Palestinian dance often done at celebrations, to commemorate the opening of the kitchen.
